Producer's Desk — religious freedom

What is “The Producer’s Desk”?

As you know, Richard Land LIVE! is a once-a-week broadcast. This is fine and good, but some of us are—let’s be honest—borderline ‘addicts’ when it comes to reading the news and blogs. Fear not! This is where the Producer’s Desk fills that Sunday-through-Friday void when RLL is not broadcasting.

Subscribe to this feed in your news-reader or email and read what Richard and the Richard Land LIVE! producers are reading throughout the week! (Hint: It may inform what you hear on the Saturday live broadcast.)

We hope you enjoy!

Why are groups such as the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Feminist Majority Foundation, the Women’s Media Center, and numerous “pro-choice” groups apoplectic over a Super Bowl commercial sponsored by Focus on the Family?

Clearly, the commercial’s subject matter has propelled it to the front ranks of controversy in the days leading to the Super Bowl. Entitled “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life,” the ad purportedly (though none of the ad’s critics have actually seen it) tells the story of Florida All-American and Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam.

On Friday morning, Robert Parham posted an article titled SBC More Partisan than Senators on Sotomayor slandering the ERLC and the SBC. (It has since been retitled sometime after Richard Land posted his response.)

You will find Richard Land’s response, Sotomayor, the ERLC, Parham and the Facts here.

Things I liked:

“I appreciated the unequivocal commitment to confront violent extremism in all of its forms, although I did note the word ‘terror’ or ‘terrorism’ was never used. It seems to me the difference between terrorism and violent extremism is a distinction without a difference.

“I also appreciated the defense of religious freedom. ‘Freedom of religion is central to the ability of peoples to live together. People in every country should be free to choose and live their faith based upon the persuasion of the mind and the heart and the soul.’ One can’t ask for a better affirmation of soul freedom, the soul freedom that is a treasured gift of our Baptist ancestors to America.

Things I didn’t like:

“The fact that he seemed to imply a moral equivalence between the Holocaust and the sufferings of the Jewish people versus the sufferings of the Palestinian people. They are not equivalent. Any suggestion or intimation that they are diminishes our understanding of the horror of the Jewish experience in the Holocaust.

“Also, the fact that there was no mention of the role our military has played in the liberation of millions of Muslims from oppression in Kuwait, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq was disturbing.“

Very little change in policy compared to Bush…

“President Obama, admitting belatedly and begrudgingly the success of George W. Bush’s surge strategy, decided to keep large numbers of troops there for another 19 months and an unspecified number after that. Responsibly, he decided not to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.” – Michael Barone, “Back to the Future,” Townhall.com, April 21, 2009

PRESIDENT OBAMA’s CHANGES

Less than 100 days into term in the nation’s highest office, President Obama has already made sweeping changes to policies that bear direct impact on Christians. In many instances, these changes have been to the detriment of families who hold biblical values dear. President Obama has made such changes in at least four broad areas…

My latest column @ ERLC.com:

The stimulus is coming! Those who voted for it gave it thunderous applause Tuesday night during the President’s speech to the combined houses of Congress. What is yet to be seen is what exactly it stimulates. One section is almost certainly going to stimulate religious discrimination. Within the massive bill is a section that reads: “No funds awarded under this title may be used for…modernization, renovation, or repair of facilities—(A) used for sectarian instruction or religious worship; or (B) in which a substantial portion of the functions of the facilities are subsumed in a religious mission.”

Sign the petition to join us as we stand together to say “Enough!” to the campaign of hate and intimidation being waged against the LDS Church and other supporters of California’s Proposition 8.

Now is the time to stand together to protect the rights of minority religious communities to participate in the political process without fear of violence, intimidation, or vandalism.
